A Molar and an Incisor

The groans could be heard all over Macclesfield (and district) when this question was read out.

I know we like to encourage entertaining questions, but that surely doesn't mean we have to include 'jokes' as corny as this.

I've said before on this website that joke questions of any kind (corny or not) are a risky business. It's one thing to use them when everybody has to answer the same questions; it's quite another when a question is directed at one person, and whether you get the right answer or not depends on whether you get the joke. (Or, even worse, if it depends on whether you've heard it before.)

Of course this was the second supplementary question, but another thing I've said before is that "It's only a supplementary" doesn't wash. Supplementaries are not just there to provide a bit of entertaiment at the end of the evening; they're there in case something goes wrong – because the answer given on the question sheet is wrong, or the question master's forgotten to pass it over, or whatever. In such circumstances, someone who gets a supplementary that they might consider to be unfair is even more likely to get upset.
